Burundi Fact Sheet

Resource Properties

Abstract:

This three-page fact sheet educates service providers about Burundian refugees. The document examines the causes of this refugee situation, and reasons for their resettlement in the United States. Language challenges are explained, as very few speak or understand English. Most were farmers, but some learned other trades and skills while living in camps. The document outlines challenges to their integration, including low literacy skills, lack of exposure to modern amenities, availability of Kirundi-speaking caseworkers and interpreters, past trauma, and large family sizes. The USCRI's complete Life Skills for Burundian Refugees resource is also available at www.refugees.org
