Abstract:

This two-page report informs service providers working with refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It provides a historical timeline (1885-2012), brief descriptions of methods of torture used in that country, and a synopsis of current conditions and pertinent issues facing refugees from the DRC. It discusses the country's current situation, including death toll figures since the start of fighting in 1998, regional involvement in violent ethnic conflict, the rebel group M23, the security situation in the North Kivu region, attacks from the LRA, and the role that greed and profit from the trade in minerals in the regional situation.
