Global TravEpiNet (GTEN) PREP (Providers' Rapid Evaluation Portal) Healthy Travel Checklist
This one-page handout educates international travelers, including those who are returning home to visit friends and relatives, about ways to prepare for a trip and to stay healthy. The PREP Healthy Travel Checklist gives people advice about taking medications, including anti-malarial medications, if prescribed. It provides recommendations for what to do during an international trip to protect from bug and animal bites, practice food and drink safety, handwashing, and follow road and motor vehicle safety. Guidance for what to do in the case of illness or injury occurring during a trip, as well as for fever experienced during or after a trip, is provided. The document includes web sites for further information, and a place for a healthcare professional to add personalized notes for the patient.
Massachusetts General Hospital also offers the Global TravEpiNet (GTEN) Pre-Travel Providers' Rapid Evaluation Portal (Pre-Travel PREP). This web page is a free clinical reference tool that helps healthcare professionals give up to date and destination-specific recommendations to patients who are traveling internationally. Developed to act as an interactive Yellow Book (CDC's Health Information for International Travel), Pre-Travel PREP uses an online form to assist clinicians in preparing a U.S. traveler for a safe and healthy international trip. The form asks basic questions about the provider, and uses the traveler's age, sex, destination county, context of travel, and medical problems or conditions to deliver recommendations. These recommendations are meant to be used by the healthcare professional as an adjunct to the management of clinical care.
