The Role of Spirituality in the Treatment of Torture Survivors

Resource Properties

Abstract:

This four-page information guide educates service providers working with refugees about the role of spirituality in the lives of those persons who have survived torture. It defines spirituality, and provides signs of a patient experiencing a spiritual struggle. It outlines how to integrate spirituality into trauma treatment using three stages of recovery: safety and stability, remembrance and mourning, and reconnecting with ordinary life. Mindfulness practices are discussed, including breathing and interactive exercises.
