Life Skills for Burundian Refugees, Volume 1

Resource Properties

Abstract:

This 108-page guide gives service providers a program of life skills materials to assist Burundian refugees in overcoming cultural barriers to integration and obtaining self-sufficiency while adjusting to resettlement communities in the United States. These materials can be used in groups with a facilitator to enhance the learning experience for participants and by encouraging further discussion and participatory activities while addressing their questions and concerns. The guide provides objectives, issues for further review, discussion topics, activities, and evaluation questions concerning eight topics: the role of the resettlement agency, personal care, nutrition, health, adjusting to a new home, safety and emergencies, housing, and employment. Each topic is presented as an illustrated handout of culturally and linguistically appropriate material in Kirundi and English. These eight handouts educate and help orient Burundian refugees in their transition to life in the United States.
