Abstract:

This one-page handout uses text and photographs to educate people about xerostomia, also known as dry mouth, which is due to lack of saliva. It describes common symptoms of dry mouth, and discusses some of the oral health problems that can occur, including halitosis and cavities. It identifies possible causes of dry mouth as medication, radiation and chemotherapy, disease, and substance abuse. The document clarifies that there is no cure for dry mouth, and provides steps people can take to help manage the condition.
