Preventing Decay with Fluoride

Resource Properties

Abstract:

This one-page handout uses a question and answer format to educate people about the benefits of the mineral fluoride in preventing tooth decay. It explains how fluoride works topically by being put right on the teeth with many dental products such as toothpaste and mouth rinses, and systemically by being naturally present or added in different amounts to foods and water. It discusses how fluoride helps stop cavities, how to get fluoride, and who can benefit from its use. The document provides recommendations for getting safe levels of fluoride, especially for children, and includes tips for strong teeth and good oral health.
