Tongue Base Strengthening Exercises
This two-page illustrated handout educates people about exercises to strengthen the base of their tongue, which can help some people with swallowing problems. It contains brief instructions for six exercises to help people strengthen and improve the movement of their tongue base. It describes the Masako maneuver, gauze exercise, effortful swallow, gargle exercise, tongue pull-back, and yawn. The document includes check boxes where a healthcare provider can indicate which exercises they should do, and a place where they can write in the number of times a day the patient should perform the exercises, and number of repetitions per session.
